FBI official resigns over alleged bias
FBI official Scott Jones resigned Monday after The Hill revealed he was accused of bias against Hillary Clinton during a probe into former FBI Director James Comey’s handling of the investigation into her private email server.
Jones, a senior manager with the bureau’s national security division, was one of several officials the Trump administration has fired for allegedly violating ethics rules.
Trump fired Jones in August.
Former White House national security adviser Ben Rhodes resigned in July.
The former Justice Department official was hired by the bureau in 2013 to oversee a review of FBI policies and practices.
Jones had been in charge of an investigation into the Clinton email investigation that focused on whether she broke the law by using a private email account and using a personal server.
Trump fired Rhodes in July amid a backlash from the public and the political establishment over his handling of a report into the probe, including allegations of improper coordination between his presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
The investigation was launched after a report by the FBI that found that Clinton used a private server for her emails during her tenure as secretary of state.
That report was released in January, less than a year after Comey testified before Congress and denied any improper communications with the Clinton campaign.
An investigation of the FBI’s handling the Clinton probe has become a focal point in the 2018 midterm elections and is expected to be one of the biggest battlegrounds in the midterm elections.
