The Prime Minister’s Department will hold its first public briefing on the HSU scandal
A senior government source has told Independent that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will hold a briefing on Wednesday afternoon, where he will outline his response to allegations that his department is failing to prevent an internal scandal within the HUHS.
“The Government will have a briefing tomorrow, but there will be no public briefing,” the source said.
Mr Turnbull will address the HSE on the issue during a press conference on Wednesday evening, the source added.
Mr Abbott has defended his department’s handling of the HUS, saying it has not been “complicit” in any wrongdoing.
“In no way, shape or form have I condoned the behaviour of anyone within the Department of Human Services,” Mr Abbott said.
“There’s been a great deal of criticism of the way the HUs have been operating over the last several months.”
The Prime Minister said the HUES has a clear culture of “trust and integrity” and that the Department’s actions are “within its legal mandate”.
“I don’t think any of us would condone the conduct that was being done and I don’t believe that that should be tolerated by any institution in Australia,” he said.
He said he believes there is a “very clear culture within the Government” of “respect” and “responsibility” for the work the HUES do.
“If you look at the Hues’ work in the last couple of years and you see that the organisation is performing at its statutory mandate and I think that is reflected in the fact that there’s been no major systemic failures or breaches of the law,” he told ABC Radio.
“I think it’s clear that there has been a very clear culture that has been established, and I know the HPU will be conducting a very, very detailed review of that.”
Mr Abbott said he will “absolutely” support the Hue’s investigation.
“It’s a very important inquiry.
I believe that there will probably be a report from it,” he added.”
That will be the basis of my support for it.”
And I think the Government is doing its part to ensure that this is a report that is a good one.
“The Opposition said the Opposition would also hold a “public inquiry” into the HUI.”
What we’re hearing now is that the HUA has conducted an inquiry into itself, and it has produced a report.
That’s really troubling and it’s important that we get to the bottom of this,” Mr Hanson said.
